Name and Location:

Joseph M. Joeb
Lutz (pronounced loots), Florida
Tampa is one of our suburbs!
Joe taught at the Academy of Health Professions through the 1997 school year. The Academy of Health Professions is a magnet high school for students who intend a career in the medical/health care field.
The Academy of Engineering, another magnet, operates on the same site.
Joe taught Critical Thinking Skills, a required subject for all incoming students in both schools.
Beginning with the 1997-98 school year he moved to the BRAND SPANKIN' NEW Sickles High School.
He continued teaching Critical Thinking Skills during the first two years, but moved to Philosophy, Humanities and History for honors and gifted students in 1999/2000.  This "state of the art" facility is located on 84 acres of northwestern Hillsborough County. The campus reminds one of some of the reasons Plato chose to conduct classes out in an olive grove.
When Alonso High School, another BRAND NEW facility opened for the 2001-2002 school year, Joe went there for American History with the intent of opening Philosophy and other Social Studies elective courses in following years.

Joe's wife, Lee, is a CPA and deserves recognition for putting up with him.

Hobbies and Interests: Joe is an artist/illustrator and caricaturist. He raises birds, writes occasionally and enjoys cooking. His book, "The Humpty Dumpty Cookbook," filled with egg recipes of all sorts, is no longer in print.  His new book, "The Campus Curmudgeon's Compendium," can be accessed by clicking  HERE .
A particular interest is gifted education and gifted kids, the "hidden disadvantaged."
He was Tampa Bay Mensa's Gifted Children's Program Coordinator for over four years.

Mensa for Students Activities

Our regular activities are suspended for the time being.  We'll still be here for all the rest.  See top of page for email address to inquire about resumption of activities.
Mensa for Students is part of Tampa Bay Mensa's Gifted Children's Program.
Any Gifted Student from the Tampa Bay area, whether Mensa member or not, is welcome to take part in our activities.
We meet bi-monthly on the second Saturday (usually) of the month (odd numbered months). Although it's now every other month, we still call our activities "monthly mini-gatherings." Our monthly mini-gatherings (MMG's) involve a wide range of activities.

A recent activity was a picnic at Lowry Park (Jan., 2000).  One of the nice things about living in Florida is the almost year-round outdoor activities. In September and again in November, 1999 (many could not make the first trip) we went to Dinosaur World in Plant City.
There are pictures on the images page.

Gifted Students who would like to get involved in our activities need only e-mail teacherjoe@aol.com . To hasten the process, include an evening phone number.

Here's a list of some of the stuff we've done and places we've gone. This is not a complete list of our activities, just a sample of the types of things we do.

January's MMG took us backstage at the Tampa Bay Performing Arts Center.

February's MMG was a visit to a forensics laboratory. Among the more interesting things we saw was "Villain," a dog who can sniff out one part per billion of an accelerant (like gasoline) at an arson scene.
David Herring, president of Interscience, Inc., really provided us an entertaining visit.

April provided the perfect time for a picnic. One of our members hosted the picnic/swim party. No one drowned.

May took us to the Florida Marine Research Institute (see page two ).

In June we visited the new Clearwater, Florida Police Station. Our turn-out was good and no one got left behind (see Mensa for Students Images on page four).

August 14th was a "week-day must" program. We toured Tampa City Hall, sat in on a City Council Meeting, peeked into some offices and were supposed to meet Mayor Dick Greco.

January 1998 took us to an animal hospital in north Tampa. Due to scheduling conflicts, the third Saturday was the mmg. Dr. Topor, of Livingston Animal Hospital deals with all kinds of animals and is an avian specialist. She is among the most community spirited professionals in the state.

In March 1998 we went to MacDill AFB in Tampa. Our activities included a look at a "refueling tanker" (one of those huge jobs that links up with the jets to fuel in mid-air) as it underwent an overhaul.
Some of us climbed up to the top of the control tower and observed activities there. See some pictures at Mensa for Students Images .

May 16th, '98 we got a "backstage" look at the St. Petersburg Pier and aquarium. After our excursion, members went on their own to explore further or take a shuttle to visit a Russian Submarine docked nearby.

July's plans included a tour of WFLA radio studios (and the four other Jacor Broadcasting stations housed in the same building). See photos at Mensa for Students Images .

November took us to Heritage Village for a look at turn of the century life in Florida (pictures on the images page).

March 1999 took us to a company that produces outdoor advertising.  It was a "hands on" field trip (see Mensa for Students Images ). Outdoor America Images has state of the art equipment and our students even got to do a little "hands-on" stuff.  Our turn-out was very light, but that provided more individual attention to each question that was asked.

March 2000 we visited St. Petersburg's Sunken Gardens. There are a few pictures at Mensa for Students Images.
